What is Draping?

Draping is a technique used to create designs, using a dress form and fabric. Using the method of draping the fabric on the form.

Draping Tools

Like in other areas of dressmaking draping requires specific tools to achieve your desired results.

Dress Form/Types

In the " Know Your Tools" portion of the masterclass we cover dress form a bit, what we don't cover is the types available.

This illustration is from the textbook " Draping for Fashion Design"

These illustrations depict slightly older designs, however the nature of the design remain present today. What is not included is the increasingly popular 1/2 scale dress form, which I will used for my demonstrations. It's great for testing ideas before you move them over to the full scale dress form.

Muslin/Types-

Depending on the fabric of the actual garment you intend to create, you'd need to match as closely as possible. for the purpose of basic draping we use unbleached cotton between 55" to 60" inches wide.

Style Tape-

Style tape is what we are going to, use to prep our dress form. You can look up the word draping tape as well to buy your own, its usually black (or dark color you like, it has to be visible under the fabric). Its also usually about 1/8- 1/2 wide. It can be actual adhesive or the pin- able type.

Blue /Red pencil/Markers-

Used for marking grain lines and any additional fabric markings

Pins

You can used either regular dress making pins or ball top pins. Whichever is best for you.
